Aphorisms: Piano Works by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Sarah Nemtsov and Dmitry Shostakovich

Review American Record Guide: Individually the sketches are tiny, most under a minute long, but listening to the work as a whole it comes across as a continuous sequence of variations, with the brief silences between the sketches becoming part of the musical fabric. Twenty Sketches is aptly described in the notes as a “cycle of closely interrelated miniatures, intricately interwoven thematically to create [as Schumann said of his Papillons] a poetic entity”. Nemtsov’s idiom is “contemporary” and uncompromising--atonal and athematic, with much use of tone-clusters, widely disjunct lines, and violent contrasts in dynamics and register. Still one never doubts the composer’s skill, integrity, purpose, or conviction. There are moments of quiet beauty, where the piano flowers, if only briefly, into enraptured song, and the music radiates emotional involvement, and for that reason especially, holds and rewards the open-minded listener’s attention with a fierce, deeply-felt expressiveness, even lyricism.
